Do You Know What An "Ellipsis" Means?

Researched Information

From a District Overseer:

You will love this information!

He gave the final talk after the Watchtower study. He mentioned a point from the Bible that was new to me and so interesting that I want to share it with all of you.

Part of his talk dealt with not only reading the Bible daily but enhancing our Bible reading. A new point for me is found at Gen.3:22.

At the end of that Scripture there is a long dash.

 Ge 3:22
And Jehovah God went on to say: “Here the man has become like one of us in knowing good and bad, and now in order that he may not put his hand out and actually take [fruit] also from the tree of life and eat and live to time indefinite,—”

The Bro. explained this is termed an " ellipsis", a speaker's incompleteness of thought (See the large
Reference Bible page 1556 under "Literary Forms-Other Devices").

He stated that since it's Jehovah who is speaking...how could He have an incompleteness of thought?

Well, apparently, an ellipsis is sometimes associated with emotion.

Adam and Eve had just confessed their sin (rejection of His sovereignty); (verses 6-13).

Although Jehovah described their sad life-changes and ultimate death, (verses 16-19), He still lovingly still cared for their needs, (verse 21).

Then, in verse 22, as Jehovah is speaking, He possibly is also reflecting not only on the pain their rejection has caused him but also how different life would now be for them...vastly different than the wonderful life He had planned for them.

Thus, at the end of that verse, the ellipsis possibly indicates that Jehovah was not incomplete but overcome with emotion. He got "choked up" so to speak !!  The same thing apparently happened to Jesus.

                                               Matt. 23:37
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the killer of the prophets and stoner of those sent forth to her,—how often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks together under her wings! But YOU people did not want it.

The Bro. then summarized the point by stating that when we pay attention to even the small details in the Bible and research anything that puzzles us.... our daily Bible reading can be enhanced and even more rewarding!

I was certainly enlightened by the above so just wanted to share it in case this point is new to you as well. We can be happy knowing that Jehovah
will always continue to educate us.

A ellipsis can also mean some information is being left out. What if God had the author of Genesis leave out part of what really happened? Perhaps it was here the plan of redemption was discussed. Details of what was to happen next and so on until the redemption of man in the final days? Just a thought. May God bless your study of His word.

This has been clarified. Jehovah would not have been overcome or lost control of his emotions...he is perfect. In the case of Genesis it was the rapidity with which the action was carried out. ie before he was even done speaking he had carried out the action. (Nov 2000 w page 27 pár 3)
