A radio drama was performed on October 30, 1938, directed and narrated by Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells's novel "The War of the Worlds" (1898).
The show was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins, which suggested to many listeners that an actual alien invasion of the United States by Martians was currently in progress!
Such was the program's realism, many reports appeared in the press of panic, with people taking measures to protect themselves and their families from the approaching alien hordes!
